Operations Strategy
Operations strategy creates environmental benefits through service center networks, intermodal use, and triples operation.
Service center networks are optimized for hyper efficiency
Shipments flow through our service centers that effectively allow us to "car pool" for shipments. Our service centers act as freight staging areas which leads to the highest utilization of trailer space possible. Out large scale service center network drastically reduces the percentage of empty miles.
- Estimated annual CO2 reduction from network efficiencies 300,000 tons annually
Percentage of average empty miles:
YRC Worldwide companies: less than 8 %
Other Industry sectors: up to 18%
Intermodal use
Intermodal utilization is a valuable emissions reduction strategy. This strategy is utilized when rail movement can meet required service delivery schedules. At the beginning and end of the intermodal movement, trailers move by truck, with the long distance in between transported by rail.
- Moved more than 300,000 units over 300 million miles by rail annually
- Increased use of rail in Southern California avoids congested Southern California highways
- Estimated C02 reduction annually 500,000 tons
Triples operation
YRC Worldwide uses triples—one tractor pulling three, 28-foot trailers—in several Western states, Ohio, and Indiana.
The federal government limits triples to specific lanes. Expansion of triples lanes would provide opportunities to reduce fuel.
- Triples are up to 25% more fuel efficient than doubles
- YRC Worldwide companies run nearly 30 million triples miles annually
- Estimated C02 savings more than 100,000 tons
