Fuel-Saving Practices
YRC Worldwide fuel-saving practices include: speed governors, engine-idling restrictions, and on-site fueling locations.
Speed governors
Speed limit governors reduce fuel consumption.
- YRC Worldwide caps speed at 62 mph
- Better than industry: ATA proposes a 68 mph cap
Engine-idling restrictions
We have self-imposed restrictions—well below industry standards—on power-unit idling to reduce emissions and save fuel. Many states and localities are seeing the benefit of this practice and
beginning to issue idling restrictions. Power units burn 1 gallon of fuel per hour when idling.
- On-duty idling limited to 5–15 minutes
- Overnight idling eliminated by YRC Worldwide companies
buying 900,000 hotel rooms annually for drivers
- Estimated annual fuel savings from driver lodging: 9 million gallons
On-site fueling stations
By operating our own fueling stations, we eliminate miles and idling. We also voluntarily
buy biodiesel fuel in addition to buying it in states where it's mandated.
- 2006 bulk and retail fuel purchases = 350 million gallons
- 2005/2006 year-over-year increase in use of biodiesel = 50 percent
Fleet strategy and operational practices create significant fuel savings every year.
