Fleet Strategy
With 27,000 power units, the YRC Worldwide
companies have many opportunities to protect the environment. Our fleet strategy centers on: equipment use, cleaner-burning fuels, and fuel-efficient engines.
Equipment use
To minimize emissions, the newest equipment with the newest emission controls runs the most miles; older equipment runs
the fewest miles.
| Unit Type |
Average Annual Miles |
| Sleeper |
240,000 |
| Linehaul Day Cab |
180,000 |
| City |
35,000 |
Cleaner-burning fuels
To support environmental sustainability, we are testing alternative fuels. Our use of ultra-low sulfur diesel complies with EPA initiatives to reduce heavy-duty power-unit emissions.- Ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel introduced in 2006
- Cleaner engines introduced in 2007
- Exhaust after-treatment devices planned for 2010
- Proposed system will require new fuel tanks on power units and new storage capabilities at service centers
We also are voluntarily testing biodiesel fuel, an emerging alternative, which burns cleaner than petroleum-based diesel.
Fuel-efficient engines
Engines in linehaul power units are rebuilt to the newest EPA standards about every 5 years.
Cleaner-burning engines are to be added to the fleet:
- Testing cleaner-burning engines
- Planning to add 400 new units with cleaner-burning engines to linehaul fleet
- Late 2007/early 2008, anticipate 300 new day cabs and 100 new sleepers
- The 400 new cleaner-burning tractors will be be placed in the linehaul fleet where they run the most miles
Our fuel-efficiency strategies also include replacing existing forklifts with lower-emissions models. |
